Nostalgia Time: Games I grew up with.

Hey everybody! I have recently come to realize that as I grow older, I keep buying or looking for things that I loved so dearly in childhood that kept me sane. I guess in a way I'm holding on as hard as I can to my youth. And I guess that on some deeper level I must think that as long as I'm a gamer, I'm still a kid inside. (Aren't we all?)

But in all seriousness, I have compiled a (long) list of games that I grew up with by year. Most of these games I didn't own, but I have played at least once on a friends console, or a family members console. I wasn't born into a wealthy family, just one with well off grandparents (and not that well off, either). Middle class mostly.

I wasn't born until 1992 but I still played games released before then.

1986
Super Mario Brothers - Released March 3 by Nintendo on the NES

1990
Sonic the Hedgehog - Sega releases Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) for the Sega Genesis/Mega drive. Introduced Sonic, who would go on to become Sega's mascot.

1991
Battletoads - The first Battletoads game was designed for the NES and released by Rare in 1991.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past- November 21st released by Nintendo in Japan, and in North America a year later the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.

1992
Super Mario Kart Releases September 1st by Nintendo in the US for the SNES, Super Mario Kart.

1993
Doom - idSoftware releases Doom December 10, a seminal first person shooter that advanced 3D graphics for computer games.

1994
Point Blank - Point Blank was originally released by Namco in 1994. Namco later created two ports for the PlayStation and the Nintendo DS called "Point Blank DS" were later developed and released in 1998 and 2006.
Donkey Kong Country -Nintendo releases Rare's Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, featuring distinctive 3D pre-rendered graphics. it was followed by several sequels. I always loved the hand held versions.

1995
Time Crisis -  Namco releases Time Crisis. I loved the arcade version, much more fun. Basically an active point blank for adults. :)

1996
Pokemon Red and Green - Nintendo releases Pokemon Red and Green for the Game Boy in Japan, launching a widly popular game series worldwide. The games would be released as Pokemon RedPokemon Yellow and Pokemon Blue in North America.
Resident Evil - March 4th, Capcom releases Resident Evil for the PlayStation known as Biohazard in Japan.
Super Mario 64 - June 23rd, Nintendo released Super Mario 64, the first 3D Mario platformer in Japan as the flagship for their new Nintendo64 system.
NiGHTS into Dreams - July 5th, Sega releases NiGHTS into Dreams for the Sega Saturn in Japan. I absolutely LOVED this game.
Crash Bandicoot - September 3rd, Sony releases Crash Bandicoot. Crash then becomes the mascot for the PlayStation console.
Diablo - November 30th, Diablo is released. it is the first chapter in Blizzard Entertainment's enormously popular series for the PC.

1997
Mario Kart 64 - February 10th, Nintendo releases Mario Kart 64 for the N64 console.
Star Fox 64 - July 1st, Nintendo released Star Fox 64 for the N64 console.
Final Fantasy VII - September 7th, released by Square (now Square Enix) and published by PlayStation as the seventh installment in the Final Fantasy series. FFVII Arguably the best Final Fantasy game as described by huge fans. Not really my type of game play but I like the story.

1998
Spyro the Dragon - September 10th, released for PlayStation by Insomniac Games. The first game in the Spyro the Dragon series. Spyro would later become one of the most recognizable, popular and respected gaming icons for the PlayStation gaming console.
Metal Gear Solid - Released October 21st by Konami for the PlayStation. Metal Gear Solid game follows Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit. Can you say spy movie? Heck yes, and you can say its the game which made the stealth genre popular.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -  Released by Nintendo on November 21st for the N64. The first 3D Zelda game, a favorite among Zelda fans to this day. The player controls the series's trademark hero, Link, in the land of Hyrule. I love The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time <3.

1999
Mario Party - Released February 8th by Nintendo for the N64 it was the first party video game series featuring Mario series characters in which four human- or computer- controlled characters compete in a board game interspersed with mini-games. Mario Party is a good game to play when drunk.

Pokemon Snap - Released March 21st by Nintendo for the N64 as part of the Pokemon series where the object of the game was to take good pictures of rare Pokemon. I remember watching my cousin play Pokemon Snap. I loved when he found Mew.

Super Smash Brothers - Released April 27th by Nintendo for the N64. It was the first game in the Super Smash Bros. series, and was followed by Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii in 2008.

Unreal Tournament - Released November 26th by GT Interactive. It was a first person shooter video game co-developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes for the PC.

2000
The Sims - Released January 31st by Electronic Arts for the PC as a strategic life simulation computer game developed by Maxis. The Sims is a simulation of the daily activities of one or more virtual personas in a suburban household near SimCity. Who else remembers the cheat code? I do!
Pokemon Gold and Silver - Released October 15th by Nintendo for the GameBoy Color.People argue all the time that Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver were the best hand held games out of the old versions.

The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask - Released October 26th. Ahh, just in time for Halloween amirite? It was for the N64 as a sequel to Ocarina of Time. Much harder than Ocarina of Time because you're dealing with a time limit. Clever!I love The Legend of Zelda Majoras Mask, it's a beautiful game.
Banjo Tooie - Released by Rare November 20th for the N64 as the sequel to one of my favorites: Banjo Kazooie. Banjo Tooie has more complex characters.

2001
Runescape - Released January 4th by Jagex Ltd. The game has approximately 10 million active accounts, over 130 million registered accounts and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's most popular MMORPG. Comparing it to WoW is like comparing Star Wars to Star Trek.

Paper Mario - Released February 5th by Nintendo for the N64, the first Paper Mario game of a weird series of games featuring Mario Brothers characters.
Conker's Bad Fur Day - Released March 5th by Rare for N64. Conker's Bad Fur Day is like Rare's proof they don't just make kid games. The next game of the Conker series came out for the Xbox console Conker: Live & Reloaded which features Xbox Live capabilities.

Devil May Cry - Released October 17th for the PlayStation 2 by Capcom. It is a series of four hack and slash video games set in the modern day (possible the mid to late 1990's). Originally intended to be a sequel in Capcom's Resident Evil series, Devil May Cry was such a radical departure from the series' style that it was developed into a new property entirely.

2002
Animal Crossing - Released September 15th by Nintendo for the GameCube. Animal Crossing is a game in which the player lives his/her own virtual life in a town populated with anthropomorphic animals. The game takes place in real time, reflecting the current time of day and season. What is so addictive about this game? Nobody knows. I wonder what the world would be like if the people who played Animal Crossing for hours and hours and hours took that time to better their own lives?
Kingdom Hearts - Released September 17th for PlayStation 2 featuring both Disney characters as well as Final Fantasy Characters. The game play is similar to Final Fantasy and shares stunning cut scenes similar to Final Fantasy, however does not sacrifice real time graphics. Kingdom Hearts is a favorite among Disney fans respectably.
Sly Cooper and the Theivius Raccoonus - Released September 23rd by Sucker Punch Productions for the PlayStation 2. Sly Cooper focuses on the eponymous protagonists and master thieves Sly Cooper and his gang, as they seek out the Fiendish Five to recover his family's "Thievius Raccoonus" a book with the accumulation of all of Sly ancestor's thieving moves.

2003
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire - Released March 17th by Nintendo for the Game Boy Advance as part of the hand held Pokemon series. Essentially Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire are the remakes of Red and Blue.

Mario Kart: Double Dash - Released  November 17th by Nintendo for the GameCube. Mario Kart Double Dash was the next generation Mario Kart 64 with the choice of a 2nd character and new courses. I rape at this game.

I will conclude my long list of the games I grew up with. Keep in mind these were the major releases that I grew up with. There were many other minor games that I still love to death. Now I know that millions of other children grew up with this same list of games but feel free to comment any popular games that I missed!
